Default [Q] [SemiRant] Why does.....

GPS not work on the custom roms?

Now before you flame me about "searching the forums". Don't worry, I have. I know the fix (ie Flash back to DI18, get lock then flash to latest). Which from a not quite a dev but not a noob stand point doesnt make the least bit of sense to me.

Why does locking in an older rom make it work in a new rom.

More importantly, Ive flashed the leaked stock DK28 rom and GPS worked out of the box. If the stock rom works fine, why are the custom roms not. I haven't found a custom rom yet that has a working GPS and having moved to the EXT4 filesystem, I REALLY dont want to try flashing DI18... Im not even sure it would work. What is being tweaked or not tweaked in the custom roms to create this problem, and instead of making a rediculous work-around to make it work, how come it hasnt been fixed.

Im not implying that people arent trying to fix it, I just want to understand this.

Im going to assume that your using Syndicate Rom? If thats the case, that might be my next rom to try. Course it looks like Syndicate hasnt been updated since November and is still using DI18 anyway, which would be why it works.

Strange. I had to do the di18 lock when I first flashed any of the froyo modems to get gps, but since then my gps works great with any rom.

See mine worked on the stock DK28 which was the first one I went to. Any of the custom roms no. Now Im wondering if having gone to EXT4, can I flash back to DI18 if thats whats necessary or is it going to be a problem.

I never did understand the whole "flash back to di18" GPS workaround myself. For me personally, I rely on GPS pretty heavily for one of my jobs, and back when I was still using di18 ROM's, GPS would fail almost daily because of the cache bug. Since dk17 and dk28, GPS has been perfect for me. But anyway, to answer your question, you can always odin back to di18, but I don't see how it would help.

Yeah, doesnt make sense to me but tons of people claim it works. :: shrugs :: that may be my only option.

I asked for an explanation back when it was first figured out and never got a real answer. A lot of people say it doesn't work. But I didn't have gps in froyo from dj29 up unless I went to di18 and got a lock first. Since DK28, I haven't had a single problem with it.

It only takes like 5 minutes to flash back to DI18, get a lock, flash back to DK28. Then flashing your rom of choice and restoring data takes another 5 minutes. Not like its that big of a time investment and it absolutely works.

I'm equally confused but it totally worked for me. My GPS went from intermittent and inaccurate when I first moved to Froyo, to dead on accurate even inside my house once I reflashed that way.
