to solve the lag, install the latest firmware from archos.com
in settings/about device/powermanagement, set the cpu to overboost.
and install/use Zeam launcher.

you cant use a desire rom.

This is exactly what I did and it runs well for me. I still have some issues with it not coming out of standby after being left a while but for the most part this makes it an easy to use fun tablet. I am not that concerned with quadrant scores or creating some ultra powerful tablet. I was ready to throw it out when the firmware came out. Firmware + Zeam work excellent and now I use it everyday.

i did this still not as fast and smooth as a HTC desire which i thought it would be or better than

still happy with it and cant wait till some custom roms are released for it

would rooting it make any difference to the performance and running the ext4 on a sd card ?

I have an HTC Desire as well as my Archos 101.

The desire has more than double the ram of the 101, its bound to be more responsive

I think the 101 is very nippy to be honest once you set it on overboost and install Zeam. Also turning off live wallpapers and uninstalling (or not installing) voice search sped mine up a lot.

Default Give try to or maybe switch to.....

To all tablet lovers,

In fairness to you guys, I heard a lot of issues of the Archos 101. Since it has a single core processor. No wonder the performance is getting slow. Samsung has the same processor, but it has only 7" screen compare to 10". Nvidia Tegra 2 core is on rocks in the market tablets right now, aiming for the new OS (honeycomb). Give a try to Viewsonic Gtab...it worth for the price of 16Gb.

almost all release 'issues' with the 101 were sorted by the latest firmware update. Its now stable, pretty quick and great value for money.

the viewsonic is a good ptablet but the firmware sucks still, so im glad I went for the archos 101 to be honest.

I'd love a dual core tablet, and know that the gen8 archos tablets may never see android 2.3 let alone 3.0, but I bought the 101 knowing that it would run 2.2 and 99% of the apps out NOW, so I'm happy.

you cant get a better tablet for the money right now if you ask me.

well i have sorted mine out !

i did reinitialization of the device and installed no 3rd party applications (i think this was the main slow down) then i bumped the cpu to overdrive in the about in settings and the big one here that made all the difference was disabling the eye candy (animation) which makes no odds if your going to install zeam which i did and the market

i am now very happy with the archos 101 and have no complaints after hearing some of the horror stories with the china alternatives.

all i need to do now is find a key bored that i am happy with also a updated version on zeam and i will be chuffed to pices

have you tried swiftkey or thumb keyboard (set it to 10" tablet mode), both are great alternatives to the stock one.

swiftkey are releasing a tablet version of their keyboard soon as well.

you say you disabled the animation...? where did you do that specifically?

cheers.
