Unhappy Saying goodbye to my 101

Unfortunately a very tragic event occurred last night. I downloaded Baseball Superstars 2011. I love this game. I had the 2010 on my ipod touch but it didn't work well on the 101. 2011 version was a different story. Everything was running great. However, it's a game where you have to constantly press one area of the screen to hit the ball.

Well, after a few minutes of playing I pressed the area to hit the ball and CRACK, the screen just cracked. I couldn't believe it. I have played so many hours of this game on the ipod touch. I was very sad. Not because of the device being broken but because of the effort I put in to get it running smoothly and setup the way I wanted.

I have a friend who runs the store I bought it from. I will be returning it for a refund because I read others ending up with their screens broken and I find this ridiculous. I didn't drop it or anything. Broken because of pressing is stupid for a touchscreen device. I have always liked Archos devices and now that they had a device I really wanted I bought it. It is a great device but this is just unacceptable.

2 options now:
Wait for Motorola XOOM
Buy a nice android phone and wait for Ipad 2 (easy on the comments please)

I should say that as a community this one is great. If it wasn't for the firmware update and gapps I would have returned my device a long time ago. I think the people who dedicate themselves to development rock.

You do realize the Archos have a capacitive touch screen? That means you shouldn't be pressing on the screen, just touch it.

Secondly, I've pressed pretty hard, and I don't get how one can press through the screen. It has also survived me dropping the device. @_@

Shame that you have to leave, but I hope you'll be happier with your next device.

I've just gotten the time and card to set mine with the oc-ed custom kernel and 16GB microsd card... and I'm pretty happy with it.

I agree. You would have to really rail on that screen to crack it and there is no need since its capacitive. I'm thinking the adrenaline of the game got the best of you.

I've dropped my 101 on the cold hard floor of a coffee shop and all I got was a little scratch in the corner...

I definitely didn't rail on it but at the same time I did PRESS (multiple times) and not touch. It's just the nature of that game as well as placement of the control. Since it broke I pressed down on the screen a little around all sides and I have noticed that the screen is better supported with things behind it on the left side than on the right. Maybe I have extra muscle in my right thumb, who knows but I can say for sure it wasn't the kind of press that would crack my phone, ipod touch, or just about any other device. Looks like I will be exchanging the Archos. Friend says he can't do the return just change it. That' when I have to decide whether to build this thing again or ebay it.

If you stay with the Archos, get an Invisible shield from Zagg. That will distribute some impact. I have clobbered the screen on my DroidX with the shield and it has held up.

I have one coming for my Archos.

I am posing this question here but if I don't get enough response I will create a separate thread.

Looks like the Xoom will be around the $1000 price range. This isn't confirmed but seems likely. That's well outside my budget. So my question is:

Archos 101 or Viewsonic G tablet? (Yes I know this is the Archos forum but I just need opinions from people if they could do it all over again)

I know it's not a choice you listed but as an Archos 101 owner that later purchased a Nook Color... I have to say look into the Nook Color.

The build quality is much better, and I really like the form factor. The 512 mb of ram is great also. It has been receiving more love than my Archos since I got it.

Just a comment on the state of things in my household concerning Android tablet usage . . . .

I have my Archos 101 and a Zenithink ZT-180 with it's single-touch resistive screen. While the Zenithink is a cheap generic Android tablet, it's quite sturdy, including the screen. That's why my grandson plays on the Zenithink and my wife and granddaughter get to use the Archos. My grandson is an enthusiastic kid who takes his gaming seriously. He's gone through two styluses - one broke and one lost in the couch (the couch ate it). I'm not sure the Archos could take his level of enthusiasm.

Bye.

Its the nature of adrenaline... if a 125 pound mom can lift a car off her child with it, surely you can get excited enough playing an intense game to press harder than you realize.

Regarding the Nook comment. The Nook is solid as heck, but I tried it before I got the 101 and I had a lot of quirky issues with it (read my post in another thread about how I don't tolerate "issues" to any great extent). I loaded ADW.Launcher on it and made it the default, but often it would "switch back" to Nook's UI. You don't have nearly the settings or control. The WiFi seemed horrible and even loading 3rd party browsers like Dolphin and Opera seemed to give a very poor web surfing experience to me. I also tried a Viewsonic. I don't think it was the G tablet, but it was a Tegra 2 device they sell at Sears for $299 and I returned it in 2 days. The lag was HORRIBLE on the thing and the screen seemed very unresponsive. Apps constantly crashed. It was just horrible. Now, perhaps a custom ROM could clear that up, but wow...very unimpressed with the Viewsonic.

So, based on my experience with these devices, I think the 101 is the best I've had and I'm very happy with it. But...I also get you are a bit skittish after losing a screen. Perhaps it was a defect in the screen itself, like a micro-fracture that, with the right pressure, cracked...kind like when a rock chip in your car windshield is there one day and then you wake up the next day and there is a crack across the entire window. Who knows...

I had the Archos 101 and was very happy with it until my micro sd card shot out of the tablet. The Archos was always a little though on the sd card so I think it was just a defective one. Huge demand for them ... I think Archos was cranking them out really quick. I was definitely happy with it. I RMA'd it through NewEgg and they refunded instead of replace. No big deal since I got a viewsonic g Tablet instead. I will let you know which of the two I like better. Plus the g Tablet got an update that is suppose to help with a lot of the responsiveness.
