I always used the same front USB port in my PC, the same... and never worked to complete the flash procedure. I posted here that when I used a WinXP machine, the procedure was successful, but in that XP machine I used the back usb connectors, so, last time, I connected in my Win7 x64 PC the USB cable on back port, and the procedure was ok.
So, I can tell that I agree with you about the USB controller. I have a powerfull PC, and The front USB ports are 2.0 like the back ones. If the front USB are 1.1, then we could think that the old 1.1 controller is the faulty one.
At this point, I think that mentioning in the first post of this thread that it's advised to use the back USB ports to flash procedure will be a good idea.
