Default Dell Software Update Coming for WP7 Upgrade and Possible DVP Fixes/Updates

Today, I was able to get some vague, but confirmed information from Dell's chief blogger in regards to an upcoming upgrade for the DVP. Lionel, who is the chief blogger/front man for a lot of their service/support information has been a pretty reliable source in my dealings.

More or less we twitted back and forth and he confirmed for me that this update is coming soon for our device. He was not able to give any timeframe, but at least he confirmed for me that an update is coming.

So for all of you with all these different issues regarding freezing, wi-fi, and performance, they will be resolved with this update. We'll see(cross my fingers).

Very good news! I spoke with one of the Dell Mobility agents today and they have now been given an official problem/resolution list with upcoming bug fixes (no solid dates that I was given) there were a couple of items mentioned that had been resolved but not released. The list was extensive and included multiple items for the camera, wifi, bluetooth, speaker quality etc... Ask one of the reps to go over the list with you, they were good enough to look it up and read over a good portion of it after I told them I had already received multiple replacements and just needed confirmation that they were addressing the issues I had mentioned previously.

I called and asked the same thing. They said "Microsoft" is working on a fix. Had no other information....What details did they give you?

No details, just that the update will have both the OS updates as well as fixes to problems for our phone.

I did find this post over in the WP7 general forum about Microsoft being involved in fixing some of these problems for the DVP:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939086

Seeing as how WP7's hardware and software are supposed to be standardized, this does kind of make sense.

I kind of downplay this. We all know something is coming for windows phone. And, generic fixes will help the Dell, because the chassis is built to specs all phones have. So some basic fixes, performance fixes, general common fixes, should occur. But specific Dell fixes, I extremely doubt. Dell released too late to be included. That's my guess.

While i know nothing about timelines I am without doubt that there are dell people working on this problem. I'm confident that it will be resolved sooner rather than later.

While this is true....remember, it was only a few short weeks ago, or even yesterday, this forum was talking about Dell support being liars, cheats, thiefs and worthless. Now, these same people have this wonderful piece of information.

While I welcome any fix that comes, they most likely read it on engadget or something, and applied the logic, everyone phone will get some fixes to issues. Duh.

Remember once again....the reason for the delay in shipping the Dell in the first place, is still at the heart of the problems now. WiFi, SD cards, and other performance issues are all Dell based, not MS based. And, I suspect, that Dell must submit them to MS to be included in any update. This is not to say that MS doesn't have some work to do too. But, IMO, what troubles the DELL, is most likely owned by DELL.

Based on previous releases, then applying what you can read on other Tech sites, I would guess an update is more likely a March April thing, than a January February thing. Though, I can hope.

Microsoft hasn't made an official statement about the release date of the update yet. I think they will announce a definite date during the keynote (next monday 4PM GMT+1). As from there it is either that they are going to annouce that it will be downloadable 'as of right now' or later that month (early March), so I would say the estimate of 8 March might be quite accurate.

This I can shed a little more light on. Microsoft has a 3-part update system in place, namely Microsoft (OS-updates), OEM (firmware-updates) and Carier (software-updates). The last one (as well as OEM apps) are done through marketplace, which we are quite used to now. The first two (OS- and firmware-updates) go through Zune and can be installed separately. This means that if Dell would release a firmware-update now, you could download and install it without altering the OS part of the device (as is the other way around with OS-updates).

However, knowing Microsoft for quite some time now, they probably try to minimize the updates you have to install. They do not want you to install an OS-update now, and a firmware-update next week. So they are probably bundling Microsoft and OEM updates in one single package, which might be the cause of the delay (rumored that Dell is fixing some issues in the next update). I do not really understand that tactic, but they are doing it for over 10 years now (think of Patch-Tuesday). In my opinion they should have released copy & paste, as soon as it was finished. Then release the speed update as separate one, this way people tend to think Microsoft's is really into Windows Phone 7. They are now too, but okay... anyway, that you didn't ask for.
