Default HD Multimedia Dock does NOT require tethering

As per the AT&T rep on their facebook page:

You do not need tethering with any of the docks. Unless there is some sort of miscommunication our internal website states that tethering is only required to get the $100 MIR when you buy the phone/laptop dock bundle.

So yes, you can use the atrix with any of the docks without a tethering plan.

That just seems so asinine. Not required for usage, just for discounted pricing. Wtf? Talk about screwing the pooch...

wait wait wait wait....

so you're telling me that the tethering plan is required ONLY if you wanted to get the bundle with cheaper pricing? So if you bought the dock separately there wouldn't be the need for the tethering.... and I can keep my grandfather unlimited data plan??

The price sure does suck, but getting that is WAY better than effing my unlim. data plan up. Hopefully they still decrease the price of the laptop dock though... seriously.

That's contrary to what is stated in the AT&T press release:

3. Laptop Dock - Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan.

That says nothing about the $100 MIR. It says that if you want to use Firefox in the webtop, you need the tethering plan.

Look here's what the current state seems to be:

You can buy the device separately and dock separately. Who knows how much that will cost. A lot, since the dock alone will be $190 multimedia dock, $500 laptop dock.

You can use the Webtop environment on Wifi without having a tethering plan.

IF you want a discounted price (mail-in-rebate, sigh) on the phone+dock bundle, you MUST purchase tethering.

IF you want to use the Webtop on the AT&T mobile network, you MUST purchase tethering. Some people have said that as soon as you launch Firefox you'll automatically get put on their tethering plan, others that you'll be prompted, I think that's all speculation at this point.

So yes, you can use the device without a tethering plan, if you plan to always be using it on Wifi when docked. Personally that kinda seems to defeat the point of it.

The HD dock will always be on WiFi, unless you don't have it at home! And it's not 190$ for the dock alone, it's 190$ for the dock, the keyboard and the mouse (AND the remote, which should be sold with the dock anyway). So that makes the dock alone 180$ :P Just kidding, I have no idea, but I can't see the keyboard+mouse being much more than 60$.
