you can format sdcard. any file tha is required for xRecovery work is stored on sdcard.
your original 2.1 rom?!
you only have CM7 ver 009 period!
what you might have is a backup on xRecovery folder. if so copy that from sdcard > xrecovery > bla bla bla to wherever
If files required for xrecovery are stored on sdcard then how can i format it?! By this i'll loose xrecovery right? I wanted to know, is Eclair rom is overwritten by CM7?

the files required for xrecovery itself are not stored on sdcard... the backups created by xrecovery are stored on sdcard...
and yes eclair rom will be overwritten by any custom rom be it CM7/freex10/etc...

i think the dd command is already there by default on stock android ( u do not even need to root for that)...
to find out where is the dd binary use the following command from the folder with adb tools...
Code:
adb shell "which dd"
generally it will be in /system/bin/
also i am curious how will the dd command be useful for forensics?
one more suggestion: have u tried WinHex?

hi doomlord,
Thanks for replying back..
I need a raw image of the phone memory..
i can get the image of the memory card which can be passed on to FTK or encase and analyse the results
But in case of phone memory(128 mb i think) it is not available as a drive for which we need to image through the adb shell. thats my understanding so far.. correct me if i am wron
I ll try winhex and thanks for the suggestion..
does any of you have the open source android forensics tool by andrew hoog if so please provide the links.. will be really grateful..
