Default No Download/Fastboot/Recovery

hey guys -

i've got an issue i've never come across before. I've got a sim unlocked d801 tmobile lg g2. picked this up on cList. It's running tmobile's stock 4.4.2 KOT49I.D80120e software.

I wanted to root and start playing with some other ROMS etc, but when I cannot get the phone to boot into fastboot or download mode. It's not bricked because the phone boots fine but when I try to enter recovery I only get option to wipe or exit. When I wipe and do factory reset, it wipes phone but doens't do anything to allow me to enter fastboot or download mode.

any ideas what I should try?

thanks in advance!!

edit: tried towelroot through play store and somehow got root access. tried to install recoveries via flashify but got nowhere. it says it successfully installed but when i hit "reboot recovery" or "reboot bootloader" it reboots into a black screen. have to power off and turn back on and stock rom still boots.
