Common Tasks

Rooting the HTC Evo Shift 4G

There is an easy step by step guide written by VICODAN on rooting 2.3 and 2.2: here
  1. Check the version of Android on your device. If you have Android 2.3, you must first downgrade to 2.2 following the instructions on the forums 1 2
  2. You will need ADB on the computer to root the HTC Evo Shift 4G and to flash the Engineering SPL. Please install the Android SDK to accomplish this.
  3. Download the Engineering SPL package: Download.
    hboot_orig.bin md5sum: 386c19451e8dd18f9b98fad6b11be4c0
    hboot_eng.nb0 md5sum: 60ec1006e6ec2e8acb370d6aad35b17e
  4. Unzip the Engineering SPL package to the root of the SD card.
  5. Temporary root the HTC Evo Shift 4G either with Visionary or z4root.
  6. Connect the HTC Evo Shift 4G to the computer via USB.
  7. On the computer, open terminal, cd to the Android SDK platform-tools folder and run the following commands:
    adb shell
    su
NOTE: If Superuser requests root permissions, allow it.
    dd if=/sdcard/Shift/hboot_eng.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
  8. At this point the Engineering SPL is flashed to the HTC Evo Shift 4G. Power off the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
  9. Hold Volume Down & the Power button, until the HTC Evo Shift 4G is booted into the bootloader.
  10. The first line should say "SPEEDY XE END S-OFF". If it does, the Engineering SPL was successfully flashed and you should be able to permanently root the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
  11. Reboot the HTC Evo Shift 4G normally.
  12. Temporary root the HTC Evo Shift 4G either with Visionary or :# 4root, again.
  13. Once temporary rooted, attempt to permanently root the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
  14. The HTC Evo Shift 4G will reboot and it should now be permanently rooted.
