HTC Wizard
The HTC Wizard is a PocketPC-class device with built-in telephone communication capability (GSM module). The device itself is made by the High Tech Computers (HTC) company and its design and hardware is then licensed to end-user companies such as subsidiaries (Qtek , Dopod ), specialized device branding resellers (iMate ) and large telecommunication companies (T-Mobile , Vodafone , O2 , Orange , Cingular) for customization and branding. Customization typically includes changes to the base software that comes with the device 'out of the box', also known as the 'Extended Rom' data. Branding typically includes a custom startup 'splash' image and a printed or engraved logo below the screen.
Models
In essence there are three models of the HTC Wizard with slightly different looks and hardware. If you already own an HTC Wizard, you can find out the exact model id by software through : Start > Settings > System tab > Device Information > Identity tab. It will be listed after "Model No.:". Alternatively, the model id might be found by lifting the battery cover, removing the battery, and reading the identification markings (not applicable to all models).
WIZA-200
The WIZA-200 is the most common HTC Wizard model. The main characteristics setting it apart from the other two models is the button layout and design on the front, its rounded buttons on the slide-out keyboard and the camera components layout. It can be found customized and branded by many companies. A short list:
- Qtek: 9100
- iMate: K-Jam
- T-Mobile : MDA Vario (extra branding: t-mobile 'hotspots' logo instead of Internet Explorer logo on top-right face button)
- O2: XDA Mini S
- Orange: SPV M3000
WIZA-100
The WIZA-100 is the second-most common HTC Wizard model. Unlike the WIZA-200, it has rectangular, hard-cornered, buttons on the slide-out keyboard. In addition, the button layout on the front face, and the camera components layout, is different. Hardware-wise, it is believed to be the same as the WIZA-200. It can be found customized and branded by fewer companies. A short list:
- Vodafone: VPA Compact II
- Cingular: 8125
- Dopod: 838
WIZA-110
The WIZA-110 is the least common HTC Wizard model. The reason for this may be found in the fact that it has no camera. Other than that, it is the same as the WIZA-100. It can be found customized and branded by at least one company:
- Cingular: 8100
Which device is better is a matter of personal preference and availability. For example, many have stated that the WIZA-200 has a superior button lay-out, design and feel on the front, but that the slide-out keyboard buttons on the WIZA-100/WIZA-110 are likely to feel more natural, and have a nicer 'look' to them.
