Common Tasks
Rooting the HTC Evo Shift 4G
- There is an easy step by step guide written by VICODAN on rooting 2.3 and 2.2: here
- Check the version of Android on your device. If you have Android 2.3, you must first downgrade to 2.2 following the instructions on the forums 1 2
- You will need ADB on the computer to root the HTC Evo Shift 4G and to flash the Engineering SPL. Please install the Android SDK to accomplish this.
- Download the Engineering SPL package: Download.

- Unzip the Engineering SPL package to the root of the SD card.
- Temporary root the HTC Evo Shift 4G either with Visionary or z4root.
- Connect the HTC Evo Shift 4G to the computer via USB.
- On the computer, open terminal, cd to the Android SDK platform-tools folder and run the following commands:

adb shell -
su- NOTE: If Superuser requests root permissions, allow it.

dd if=/sdcard/Shift/hboot_eng.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

- At this point the Engineering SPL is flashed to the HTC Evo Shift 4G. Power off the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
- Hold Volume Down & the Power button, until the HTC Evo Shift 4G is booted into the bootloader.
- The first line should say "SPEEDY XE END S-OFF". If it does the Engineering SPL was successfully flashed and you should be able to permanently root the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
- Reboot the HTC Evo Shift 4G normally.
- Temporary root the HTC Evo Shift 4G either with Visionary or :# 4root, again.
- Once temporary rooted, attempt to permanently root the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
- The HTC Evo Shift 4G will reboot and it should now be permanently rooted.
Installing a Custom Recovery Image
ROM Manager method
- Search for ROM Manager in the Market (free or paid) and install the app.
- Open the ROM Manager application and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
- Click on HTC Evo Shift 4G and then give the app root permission if it prompts you.
- If it hangs after that and freezes up, just allow the app to Force Close. Then open it back up and repeat steps 2 & 3.
- Once the flash was successful, you should see a dialog box that says "Successfully flashed ClockworkMod recovery!".
- Press OK.
- ClockworkMod should now be installed on the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
Manual method
- You will need fastboot on the computer to install the custom recovery image. Please install the Android SDK to accomplish this (Windows) or download the fastboot binary off of HTC's website (Linux & OS X).
- Download the custom recovery image: Download.
- Extract "recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-speedy.img" and:
- Copy the custom recovery image to same folder as fastboot.
- Power off the HTC Evo Shift 4G.
- Hold Volume Down & the Power button, until the HTC Evo Shift 4G is booted into the bootloader, and select fastboot.
- Connect the HTC Evo Shift 4G to the computer via USB.
- On the computer, open terminal, cd to the Android SDK tools folder or the folder to placed the fastboot binary and run the following command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-speedy.img
- After the custom recovery image is installed, boot into it.
Back Up
Backup Current ROM
- Follow instructions listed above to install a custom recovery image with ROM Manager.
- Before you backup your phone, open the ROM Manager application and select "All Clockwork Recoveries".
- Select the most recent version, currently it is v.3.0.1.4 (If you already have the most current version skip to step 6)
- Press OK.
- Your phone will flash the most current recovery image.
- Now once your phone finished, open ROM Manager and select "Backup Current ROM".
- Press OK.
- Your phone will begin the backup process, including backup of your WiMax Partition.
- Once finished your phone will restart. DONE! A backup is now on your memory card.
Backup WiMax Partition
- Connect the HTC Evo Shift 4G to the computer via USB.
- On the computer, open terminal, cd to the Android SDK platform-tools folder and run the following commands:

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p25 of=/sdcard/WiMax/wimax.bin -
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p30 of=/sdcard/WiMax/udata_wimax.bin

- Now the WiMax partition is backed up to the SD card.
