Detailed [GUIDE] Step by Step ROOT via SuperOneClick for Milestone XT720
App2SD or App2Card
- root required
Due the low amount of internal storage space on this phone, the amount of Android Market Apps that you'll be able to store will be very limited.
However there are a few ways to overcome this limitation.
App2SD
You can install App2SD script found here
Pros:
Stable, Fast & Secure
Cons:
microSD card must be permanently left inside the phone, if removed during operation the phone will crash & burn, or hang forever and have its data corrupted.
microSD must be partitioned externally
install script is done via ADB shell
App2Card
you can install App2Card app found here
Download the latest: App2Card 2.7.3 (3Dec)
Pros:
Installs as an APK app
Reliable, if the microSD ever fails, taken out during operation, or becomes corrupted, App2Card will automatically switch you phone to work back into normal mode, and fit whatever amount of Apps it's able to fit back into the internal storage
Easy to use, on touch button to enable/disable
Cons:
Unstable if ext2 partition becomes corrupted
Building partitioning tool is so so, you'll be better off partitioning the microSD manually on a Linux box
It gets confusing during its automated recovery & automatic partitioning/format modes, you don't know if it's working or hung
Original guide from REF Notes about Milestone XT720
Manual Installation
You can run App2Card the automatic way (might get troublesome), with just a lick of a button "Install EXT/Transfer apps to EXT" or you can run App2Card the manual way (safe)
* Run App2card
* Grand Superuser Access
* select Storage Tools
* select Create/Upgrade EXT partition for SD Card
* Resize your External SD to your hearts content, (example 16 GB SD can be split into 8 GB fat32 + 8 GB ext2) SWAP is not needed
* select Apply
* wait a long time for the partitioning and format to complete (speed will depends on your SD card class 2/4/6/10 speed )
* let it reboot the phone, when you get prompted to reboot
NOTE: it's easier faster and more accurate to do the partitioning on a Linux machine using Gparted or similar tools, the building partitioning tool of App2card doesn't do a very good job.
* Run App2card again
* select Enable Apps on EXT partition
* it will ask you to reboot again, let it reboot again...
* wait a long while again...
* App2SD will do its magic, then it will reboot again on its own
* wait another while
* now you should be back into the OS
* run App2card yet again
* select Application Tools
* and select the Apps/Games that you want to run from the SD card
Troubleshooting Steps:
* if you get stuck in a boot loop, hold the camera key, until it boots back into the OS
* when the phone goes back into the OS
* run App2card
* you'll get a message about problem with ext2
* select Fix
* it'll ask you to reboot let it reboot
* the phone should be back to normal after reboot
