To enter recovery mode, you hold the Volume Up + Home + Power when you see the screen flicker with the B&W logo of SGS let go of the power button
If it was done properly you should see a screen with several options:
For reference, this is what a semi-bricked Samsung Galaxy S looks like. To recover from this problem, you'll need to get into the Download Mode.
A fully bricked phone will not boot, turn on or display the charging logo when connected to a USB charger. This presently cannot be recovered from. Any recovery attempt will require the phone to be disassembled.
Download Mode (this mode is mainly used to install new ROM or custom ROM firmwares)
To enter download mode, you hold the Volume Down + Home + Power
If it was done properly you should see a screen with a big yellow triangle and the Android robot working on construction in less than 1 second
Note: There are many Bell I9000M also International I9000 floating around with this feature disabled, without the Download Mode enable you wont be able to restore from a failed firmware flash, or simply fixing your phone after installing an App from android market that causes your phone to go into an endless reboot mode, locked, or whatever is the case. We highly recommend you to take it back and exchange it for a model that can work properly with the 3 button combination.
- updated - The only way to test for real if the phone can go into download mode or recovery mode is by testing it yourself, after long research it has been found that even in the same batch of phones of the same release date, will have phones that will not go into download mode, and other that will.
So, there is no easy way to tell by simply looking at the serial # or IMEI # or SIM card # as we originally suspected.
- updated - Samsung has released a fix to allow Bell I9000M models to enter Download Mode and Recovery Mode reliably. However, (with tweaking) the fix can be applied to other models. See the links below for details.
