UnBrickable Mod is a recovery method to reload firmware onto a completely dead device.  UBM can be performed relatively cheaply with the only special tool being a soldering iron.  It does take precise soldering and therefore may be risky for the average person to try.

Hacking/Modifications

In this section you will find things above and beyond what the "average" user will do to his phone.

Rooting

Rooting the SGH-i997 is typical of most samsung devices. The device requires the SuperUser APK and the SU binary to be pushed to the /system/ folder. Busybox is typically deployed along with SuperUser to provide a robust set of standardized Linux utilities.

SuperOneClick is the easiest way to root the Samsung Infuse 4G: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 (Windows)

Instructions for Rooting the Samsung Infuse 4G can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072 (Windows)

As a general rule: if you don't know why you need root, do not root your phone. Root is the user who starts the Linux Kernel and assigns permissions to each application and user on the device. Root is on your phone when you get it. By unlocking the ability to assume permissions of the root user (rooting), you are taking on the responsibility of security which was not a concern when the device was not rooted. It is best to un-root the phone if you do not require root access.

Hacking Hardware

Most people who flash a device tend to play it safe and have at least a home-brew 301k jig. Others go the full 9-yards with several pieces of supporting hardware. Listed here you will find known hacking hardware

Resistor JIGs

A 301Kohm resistor between USB pins 4 and 5 will turn on the device and activate download mode.

A 619Kohm resistor between USB pins 4 and 5 will turn on the device and activate 192600bps UART from pins 2 and 3.

Useful Hardware

Android Open Source Accessory Platform/Arduino Mega - Can be used for interfacing and scripting UART communications.

Bus Pirate - Can be used for interfacing UART or I2C commmunications.

RIFF JTAG - Used to reload bootloaders onto the device.
