And is there any way to do with flashable zips?

I don't know about flashable zips but there are xposed modules which can change it. (sadly there are only 4 different buttons at the module I use )

Decompile home apk and do whatever you want then. Decompile with advanced apk tool. Don't forget about superuser mod.

The easiest way is use a custom launcher like nova, then download an icon pack from the appstore and apply it, you don't even need root

I use Nova Launcher. You can download it from the market several icon themes that you can then choose to install as you like.
