At last ... we have a winner ...
Ok ... I decided to try all this again on another PC ... but this time on my old trusty Samsung Q1 Ultra Notebook ... finally got Flashtool running and flashing a ROM fine ... the drivers installed without a problem ... the phone got flashed fine with a ROM labelled C6903_14.3.A.0.757_UK Generic (1276-0875).ftf ... and on the first attempt ... no more 'Sony Retail' widgets or the annoying 'Video Play' while charging ... so all good ...

The only difference is the Desktop PC has W7 64Bit and the notebook has W7 32Bit ... now I know it works ok I probably wasn't very vigilant when the drivers installed initially and so got impatient ... so probably not a Windows thing ...

Happy now ...
