Question about hotspot use/rooting

Hey guys first time posting here. I have to use my phones hotspot for online gaming (I know) and I'm looking to maximize my connection. My main goal is to open my NAT type from moderate and another thing I'd like to do is essentially "trick" my phone into using regular data instead of hotspot data. I have the unlimited Verizon data plan which, as many of you already know, wrenches you back to 3g after 10gb. I think even after the 22g, having proritized 4g would be fast then 3g. I saw a lot of of people rooting their phone and using the WIFI tehther router app to achieve the open NAT type but the latest videos I've seen are from 2014 so I don't even know if that's still possible.

Best thing I used when I had no home internet was use PDA net and a USB worked plenty fine for all games accept red alert 2
