that's weird because for some reason i checked for updates and i didn't find any security patch after November.

the method i followed:
1- unlock developer mode and turn on OEM unlock.
2- boot to download mode (bootloader) and flash latest twrp with odin but uncheck auto reboot.
3- restart manually by pressing vol down + power + home.
4- enter twrp recovery by pressing vol up + power + home and format data.
5- flash latest Magisk.zip and install Magisk Manager APK.
6- if you see that magisk wasn't installed don't panic it's normal Unlock OEM again and restart your phone you will find magisk installed.

notes:
right after flashing twrp don't give the phone the chance to boot to Samsung logo because it will reset your recovery.
don't use Supersu because it causes boot loop issue.
method tested on J7 2016 (J710F) Oreo 8.1 Security Patch Nov-1-2018

Can never get to TWRP recovery, always goes to factory recovery
"right after flashing twrp don't give the phone the chance to boot to Samsung logo because it will reset your recovery."

Seems I have the same (or similar) issue.
Install TWRP with Odin and it always passes install. Then when I try to enter TWRP recovery mode the factory recovery always comes up!
Tried w/ auto-reboot on and off.
Tried, after install, to turn off phone with vol-dwn/home/power THEN immediately (on screen blanking) switch to vol-up/home/power
Tried w/ auto-reboot on.
Tried w/ reboot off to just remove the battry then replace the battery and go into recovery, etc.
Every combination that I can think of, or have read about, all no good. Nothing I do gets me into TWRP recovery, always recovery is the factory Android recovery.

Any ideas, folks?
Thanks!

Exactly what I try, but no matter how many times I've tried (with several revisions of the TWRP) upon that 1st boot after flash into recovery mode the factory recovery ALWAYS comes up.
I wonder if the difference is that my phone is a sm-j700t, not 710f.

Again, my specs:
Galaxy j7 (SM-J700T)
Exynos Octa 7580
Android 7.1.1
Bootloader J700TUVU3BQK3
Build: NMF26X.J700TUVU3BQK3
Root access: No

Odin3_v3.13.1

Tried with several TWRP TARs:
* twrp-3.2.1-0-j7xelte
* J700T N-7.1.1 TWRP-Unofficial
* twrp_3.0.3-1_sm-j700t_23217

Dear @ashyx

I notice you haven't updated the TWRP recovery to the latest version (which is TWRP 3.2.3-0), would it be possible if you can find the time to update it? It would be much appreciated as I know you do it on your free time and you don't own this device. Many people have asked or simply demanded in very rude ways, but I hope you're still up for this. I've tried submitting an issue to TeamWin, but with no luck.

I hope that by trying out TWRP 3.2.3-0 instead of TWRP 3.2.1 resolves many issues from people in this thread, included me.
