Has anyone with the L04 been able to backup stock system image with twrp? Preferably before rooting. Or if you've already rooted your phone, can someone pull their system image and share it? Steps 1 and 2 on this page: http://xda-university.com/as-a-devel...o-a-new-device

It's not for FRD-L04. It's extracted from FRD-L09. However recoveries are highly compatible between different versions, regions and models of the same device (provided they have same SoC which is true in this case).

is it possible to back-up [and then restore] the stock ROM (of honor8) with this custom recovery (twrp) or not?

I just now attempted a system backup via TWRP (Using twrp-3.0.2-0-frd-modaco-rc1.img), and it seems to have worked. I have not tested it yet, or tried to restore it via TWRP but hopefully it works if I end up screwing up my phone lol
