I would suggest making updating the system like AICP or more visible and less hidden. There is an app icon in the app tray you can click.
When you check for updates to download, show the previous updates in case you need to downgrade.
I was on cm14.1 and downloaded a nightly build that had a sim card bug. I could not use my phone and could not downgrade because it did not list prior updates.
When updates are listed for download, state the changes there on the download section for clarity.
