Thanks. The UI / Status bar crashed, but the crash survived reboots. Not knowing what to do next I dirty flashed the same rom, hoping to restore things to normal. No change. I just did a factory reset. Lesson learned - don't be impatient - backup the SystemUI file as you suggested....

Problem solved safely in under 30 secs with an inexpensive app on the Play store called GalaxySimUnlock. Has unlocked the IMEI, without changing it, and has survived multiple custom roms, and Sims from a variety of carrier's. I suggest anyone curious about it, read other Play store comments...
