Post [PSA] Make a recovery drive before upgrading to Windows RT 8.1

I've never tried. I have a lot of old 4GB USB drives lying around from trade shows, so I'm glad to put one to use.

    Post Anyone Tried USB Ethernet?

Upgrading the Surface RT to Windows 8.1 RT kills the driver for the AX88772 chipset. I just tried it. If you want to keep wired ethernet access, don't upgrade your Surface RT to Windows 8.1.

    Post Anyone Tried USB Ethernet?

It very well could be, as Asix has now pulled that driver from its site. The latest update from Plugable says that Microsoft does not allow third-party drivers for Windows RT: http://plugable.com/2012/10/28/the-windows-rt-and-surface-usb-device-compatibility-story

This USB-to-Ethernet adapter says it works on the Surface RT, as well as other adapters with the AX88772 chipset: http://plugable.com/2012/11/16/usb-ethernet-microsoft-surface

Post On screen keyboard when Touch Cover is attached??

Yes. Charms -> Settings -> Keyboard When the Keyboard pop-up menu appears, choose Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel. That always brings up the onscreen keyboard, even if an external keyboard is attached and working.

Post well, I killed my surface RT...now how can I restore it...

When I boot up with the USB Recovery Drive, I see something a little different. After selecting the keyboard layout, I see the option, "BitLocker: Enter the recovery key to get going again." At this point, I have to go to http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey using one of my "Trusted PCs"...

Post Remove recovery partition for more space

And from my experience, you also need to do it while the recovery drive is inserted into the USB port. I was expecting to see a prompt asking me to insert the recovery drive, but that prompt never came. Finally, after plugging in the recovery drive, holding down the Volume Down key and pressing...

Post Surface RT Accessory Compatibility Thread: Post Your Results

That's interesting; the Microsoft Arc Touch mouse works fine on mine. You plugged its little wireless accessory thing into the USB port, didn't you? ---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 PM ---------- Working, with slight hack: * ASUS SDRW-08D1S-U USB...

Post taking photos directly inside word?

There's no way within Word to just punch a button and have a photo snapped and automatically inserted. But if you dock the Camera app next to Word, it's pretty easy to just tap the camera's screen to take a shot. Then, in Word, tap Insert > Pictures and tap the name of the picture you just...

Post Your personal downsides of the SurfaceRT?

The Surface supports MicroSD, MicroSDHC and MicroSDHX cards; I've tried all three in mine. What happens when you try? Are you sure you're pushing it in all the way until it locks? As for the final version of Office 2013, it's waiting for you. But it's considered an "optional" upgrade, so it's...

Post well, I killed my surface RT...now how can I restore it...

There is. Desktop > Control Panel > System and Security > File History. Tap "Recovery" at the bottom of the left pane, and you'll find an option to "Create a Recovery Drive." It copies the Recovery Partition to a flash drive and makes the flash drive bootable for using in the Advanced Startup...

Post Unable to reset or refresh Surface RT

Ah, I'd mistakenly thought showing "Hidden Items" from the View ribbon would show those. So I turned off Hide Protected OS Files, and found the Recovery folder. But when I opened a command prompt with administrative privileges and visited the folder, it was empty, just like yours.

Post Surface RT Accessory Compatibility Thread: Post Your Results

Microsoft's site seems to take an "innocent until proven guilty" approach. The site lists my StarTech USB21000S as Windows RT compatible with "free download required." Sure, it's recognized by Windows RT, but it needs a driver. Windows Update looks, but can't find anything. And, since Windows...

Post Unable to reset or refresh Surface RT

I have hidden files and folders turned on, but there's no C:\Recovery folder. I have a Recovery partition, but it's not assigned a letter.
