You still need canary or modded magisk but instead of installing stubs for magisk hide, I just uninstall the magisk manager after granting root and using magisk hide on the apps that need it.

Runs perfectly unencrypted. It's true, if you're unencrypted on Q right now then formating data isn't necessary.
