Thread new S5 thru insurance - best way to root it?

I broke my (rooted) phone and verizon is sending me a brand new replacement. When it arrives I want to root it, since it shouldn't have the latest OTA updates on it. But I am wary of just immediately following the instructions here without activating it first, because I am not sure what the OS...

    Post [How-To] Update to G900V_PF4 - 6.0.1

I dialed *228 to update my roaming capabilities. Afterwards I got no cell reception and tried rebooting my phone to fix it. Phone froze during reboot and I had to do a battery pull. Once it loaded up the Samsung splash screen had the "unlock" icon and said "Custom". In the phone settings it...

    Post [How-To] Update to G900V_PF4 - 6.0.1

I read through the thread and didn't see this asked, sorry if it's a repost: I'm not sure what to expect regarding step 7: Can someone clarify or post a step-by-step of what is supposed to happen? I'm assuming that this instruction is a condensed version of the following: 1) After the flash...

Post [MOD]Write to extsd (root required)

Just wanted to chime in and say that SDFix worked flawlessly the first time on my rooted SM-G900V. All I did was root and then run this utility, installed nothing else at any point, not even SuperSU.

    Post Status on Root/Custom Recovery/Bootloader

I went ahead and got an S5 without waiting for root. It was a bit of a pain to restore all my apps and settings without Titanium Backup, but I got around that by using each app's export/import settings function and copied is to my phone/sdcard using my PC and USB cable. I did the same for all...

I haven't been able to google an answer to this question so maybe people here can helP: SD Card Lockdown in Kitkat What are the implications of deleting an app's private folder on the external SD Card when it's uninstalled? Does this mean updating the app causes you to lose data? Is the app...

I noticed that the SIM cards looked different, even though they were both verizon... Maybe my phone hardware was different and required a different SIM card?

I used to get that as well, with my old phone, very rarely. It wasn't really a problem. Rebooting has not solved this problem. I have changed my modem to VRBMA2, no difference. I think I will make a nandroid and then ODIN back to stock ICS 4.0.4 to see if I get 4G that way. If I still don't...

Unfortunately that didn't help :( I was thinking of going back to a previous modem version. Would that break the ROM?

No 4g service I can't seem to get 4G service now, only 3G. Here's the deal: - Physically damaged my phone, got a replacement phone and SIM card from insurance company - Put the old SIM card into the new phone and activated it, still have the new SIM sitting by - Rooted, unlocked, wiped, etc...
