I think people are having the same issue I had when I first started using the app. The best results that I have had are to touch the d-pad and then drag through the direction you want to head. I think the bounds for the buttons are overlapping or are simply too close together without a...

I've found the d-pad to be super finicky, what has worked best for me is to touch the pad and then drag through the direction that you want to go.
