I forgot to say that I repacked Magisk already. I'm afraid I have never used the shell for this. Do you mean using it with the phone connected to the computer or directly on the phone? Can you please explain? Sorry for the n00bness.

Thanks a lot for your answer. I added the hosts to AdAway, rebooted, deleted the storage of the app, registered or using the 4 digit password and the phone call and got it to work... once. I could use it going through that process (minus the host file) before, so not much of an improvement...

Ok, I managed to install TWRP. I wasn't paying attention to point 6) in OP where it says - Hold [VOLUME DOWN] + [BIXBY] + [POWER] for approx. 15 seconds. A bit of a finger twister but it worked. I didn't have to install the verity zip. Thanks a lot for your answers. All good now. Regards.
