I have 'wifi tether for root users" working on JB (CM nightly 9/2), but I often have to start it a few times before anything can see the access point. This happened on stock ICS once in a while as well though.

So, I've downloaded the T-mobile image (slowly), and each time the MD5 is wrong, on both the .7z file, and once extracted to the .tar (checked both). Also, the "wrong" values I got were exactly the same for both download attempts, using multiple md5 checking apps.

ES File Explorer (free) will let you mount system directories, you have to enable it in settings.
