You need a custom N kernel for this to work, restore will not be able to install N kernel and you will get a bootloop.

Samsung Galaxy S4, after 2 years and 3 damaged batteries. Last one being the most annoying: charging to 100% just to drop to 80-85% as soon as it was disconnected, and turning off at 40-45%, so I always had to make sure I had an outlet to "charge" it at all times.

Have you tried with another cable? My Xperia is recognized perfectly out-of-the-box on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, as soon as I connect it, PC starts to search and download drivers, no PC Companion installed nor Flashtool drivers. :/

You can indeed get root using this method, but will need to change it to SuperSU before attempting to use Titanium Backup.

Just for the record, I just tried this on a Xperia ZL LB and it doesn't work yet. Tried flashing and then restoring Kernel from Nandroid backup using TWRP on DualRecovery, and also flashing ROM and then flashing kernel and fota-kernel from last official FTF vía Flashtool. Hope somebody can get...
