To clear the remnants of the widgets after removing them, I know you need to "Clear Data" for HTC Sense ("Applications" in Settings). Perhaps if you do this again it will force a rebuild of the available widgets list, now that they've been reinstalled? (You will lose any custom scenes, btw)

I tried Handcent at one point too. I really prefer the stock Android MMS over Sense, so I'm hoping I can get this fixed.
