You shouldn't OTA update a rooted phone to begin with because those updates don't account for changes you may have made. you should be downloading the updates from here: https://developers.google.com/android/images and flashing them manually

I guess I misunderstood your meaning

You don't need TWRP to root your phone. download the latest firmware, download and install Magisk Manager, take the boot.img file from the firmware, modify it with Magisk Manager and flash it in the bootloader

Anything is worth trying, make sure to do a backup first that way if you brick your phone (which I'd give it an 90/10 chance of doing so) you can just restore your backup and everything will be fine
