the guide isn't that clear, after installing the magisk apk (which you have to find in the other guide) you should open magisk app and install anything, but to shut down the phone and then do the fastboot process, only then you do the direct method installation via the magisk app.. it wasn't...

Hey.. I tried to install magisk on the same MI A1 you helped me with via this guide I enabled oem unlocking&usb debugging, installed the magisk manager apk (but didn't install anything via magisk manager itself, the guide doesn't tell to) Then entered fastboot mode, entered on fastboot cmd...

LOL that's the first thing I did < unlocking oem.. And I assume the data was probably corrupted beforehand, because on my own mi a1 MiFlash (with save user data) worked like a charm and kept everything without even changing the OS settings & apps The owner was stupid to install shaddy phishing...

*update* while in testpoint mode, I flashed 8.1.1 rom via MiFlash, I selected "save user data*, but it didn't save anything and the phone booted on factory default settings.. When my own mi a1 was bootlooped I did the same thing (via fastboot, not testpoint) and everything was saved, I guess...

Does this guide support Mi A1 with "security patch level: october 5, 2018" and android 8.1.0 ? Should I get the july patched boot or is it too old?

yes you are right, it's vol up&vol down when it says "android one", it worked on my own functioning Mi A1, but on bootlooped Mi A1 it didn't (and I tried several times), so what's the next step :confused:

is it even possible to get into safe mode when the phone is stuck in bootloop, how do you do that on a boot looped phone?

Sorry I've been away I don't know how, might be an adware/virus that was installed via a phishing site, might be also a cleaning app or even the fact the phone fell down and caused a glass(not display) crack, but the bootloop happened long after the phone fell off with edl it would be possible...
