I've never tried it in that exact situation but I think the answer is yes...

Here is one way of doing it. This will take you all the way back to unrooted stock and you can start over. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461172

Start with the Nook completely powered off. Press and hold the Pwr. button, the Vol. + button, and the n button until you see the screen flash. Release all buttons for 1 sec then press and hold only the Pwr. button until the Nook powers down. (Backlight off) This works best in dim lighting...

Glad it helped. And for the record I have done this to 2 different Nooks more than one time and never had it plugged into the charger. It IS important to make sure you have a full battery before doing these things. The good news is that it worked! :) HB

You sure are making this hard. If you will read the thread I linked in post#2 you will see just how easy it is. It will take you back to whatever that Nook shipped with. Mine goes back to v1.3, my BIL's goes back to 1.0.0. Upgrades from there should happen automagically.
