Yes, you can. I would use gladroot. You may need to flash your phone back but yes, it can be done. I did it on my atrix. All the info to do it is on other pages.

Ok, so it seems like there is not an app in particular in fault. I am currently using a root app called 'CPU master'. This seems to at leas greatly decrease my problems.

Thanks wiredpirate. That is one great app. Im thinking that will at least help me narrow down the problem. Im sure this is the reason that my atrix is consuming an excessive amount of batter power too. thanks again.

First of you got to understand that VGA is an analog signal(the wave signal) and HDMI is digital. There is no simple way this can be done. Because you have to change from digital to analog you are most likely need to purchase a converter box of some sort.

So, do you think it would be wise to get rid of the otter box? Should I call or email the otter company?
