They probably sent you back a newer version of the device which cannot be rooted.

I wish you guys all the luck in busting open this device. It was a nice tablet except for being locked down. Unfortunately my solution was to return the MP7 and buy a refurb Nexus 7. If the MP7 gets root and CyanogenMod, I'll get one and give my wife the Nexus.
