Maybe you could download 'Root Browser', go into: data->app, and search some files that related to hangouts and delete it. Then try to reinstall hangouts in your device again. Hope it could helps you. I done this to get my titanium back for backup/restore process.

For flashing a custom rom, you do need a custom recovery to flash it.

Perhaps you would take a look over, Settings->wifi->advanced-> Scanning always available. Untick this options. This would kills your battery quickly as many users faced it before. Also can refer the method that provided by TheATHEiST, close some apps/service that you wont longer require on...
