In the folder with your recovery, preinstall, fastboot files do you have a file called adb.exe? There should also be a couple .dll's. When you open a command prompt and navigate to that folder, just like for the fastboot, then type "adb shell". Do you get an error?

Make sure you have started the adb shell. Type the commands exactly, leading "/" and ending "/" matter. This is not Windows, so no "\". If using some versions of Windows it may help to open Terminal as Administrator... I do this from a Linux machine, so it's slightly different.

To the best of my knowledge you need root to install a custom ROM. But, I am not an expert, or even very experienced. Personally, I would rather take the extra step to root prior to installing a new ROM rather than skip the step and wind up with a mess, or worse, a bricked phone. Until I know...

I have also caught my phone stuck on the Moto dual-core boot screen after what must have been a self-reboot. I'll grab a logcat next time I catch it.

Without having root, you can't get to system files, so you won't be able to delete the file. I don't know what effect that will have, probably nothing to worry about. Not sure how you could flash a ROM without already having rooted your phone... but I am no expert. No reason not to root you...

You may have to uninstall/reinstall for it to pick up the root permissions, or try another file manager to will work with root.

Keep hitting the "up" arrow until only the phone icon is showing (no storage locations). You should see: acct, cache, config... just scroll down until you find "system" (not "sys"). You may need to go to setting to "show hidden files" as well.

I'm not sure about Astro, I use ES filemanager and I had to go into settings to turn on Root browsing. Try navigating "up" to the root "/", then you will see the 'system' folder.
