I cannot make this work, I have about 4 hours into it with no luck. I get either a non booting device or formatted fresh device without TWRP. Maybe a little more clarity on the procedure would be nice.

I have the option to change the color of the soft keys with the great Rom Pure Nexus. They can be skinned with layers and colors changed from pure nexus settings.

I am on the newest firmware and rooted, so I can confirm that it works.
It's not as bad as it seems. Just follow the steps and you will be a better human for it! Happy hacking and debloating.

I never managed to get it to work on windows 8.1 by had a windows 7 laptop laying around and that worked fine. I would recommend finding a non 8.1 computer. Good luck.

Sounds to me like you need to flash the old ftf first, then root and then install the custom recovery. Root only works on the older firmware linked above.
