I don't know how that works on Ubuntu Touch. Currently there's a bug that makes phone printing some character continuously when the button is pressed in certain way. So, at this moment you may want to avoid touching those buttons while the screen is on.

You said flashing recovery from fastboot doesn't work? All ubuntu-device-flash does to flash recovery in bootstrap mode is using exactly that command. Did you use sudo with ubuntu-device-flash?
