You should talk to them for possible deactivation. You can't use both devices as your primary phone... I just got deactivation code today for my Note 9 exactly after 1 year. As long as both devices are used by someone, you're fine (they don't care about phone number or carrier change)

I can vouch for this solution. But I simply put "silenced and minimized" for insight notification. At least icon doesn't show up at the top notification bar.
