Since the device is rooted, you can use Root Explorer to modify the file; this is/was the app I used. Root Explorer is a paid app. Supposedly, ES File Explorer File Manager or BuildProp Editor can do the same; these are free.

I didn't consider this; I am still new to this whole root and updates being rooted. Good to know I am understanding what I am reading and not losing my mind due to old age :D

If phone is rooted, OTA works? I thought if phone is rooted, updates needed to be done manually (i.e., flash). Is this not correct?

Could you link to instructions? I hope this will work on Sprint. I have grandfather unlimited data and have been trying to get hotspot to no avail. I haven't updated to Oreo yet; OTA notification was received earlier today.

Yay! Replying to my own post. The steps in the OP didn't work on the Pixel XL (NKG47L). I was able to submit the codes to the pixel and those stayed after a reboot. The issue is that can't turn on the hotspot (yes I did turn off mobile/cellular data). The message is "Service not supported...
