Use Samsung KIES 3 and select "Emergency Firmware Recovery" or "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization". This worked for me even after a botched recovery flash that prevented me from going into Download mode.

That's what I did. I would note that the patch installs HtcMessageProvider and HtcMessageUploader from /system/apps. I don't know whether it was these files or the ROM that carrier specific MMS settings though.
