It booted after just flashing the rom, adding in the gapps now. Edit: booted after flashing both zips separately, thanks everyone.

The MD5 matches, I'll try out the 2/4 nightly, I was trying the official build. I'll give the banks gapps a shot too.

Any idea what I can do to get it booting? I wiped everything in TWRP, flashed the latest rom zip, flashed gapps, flashed super su, wiped cache/dalvik, and hit boot to system

Is it normal for a VS980 to take more than 10 minutes for the first boot? I'm going on minute 13 right now. Using PA gapps

Thanks for the Mi2RAW suggestion, I'll check that out. I work with raws from my dslr but I don't know how badly I really need to have all my phone pictures shot as raw. I'll see how it goes

Is there no odin flashable mdl file? I found a link to a tmobile one but since it's not the same phone I'm not about to try and flash that without checking. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628 <- TMobile, not ATT but linked from ATT faq thread.

If my goal is to get CM or any other aosp based rom on the phone will nb1 be any more restrictive than MK2? I haven't found anything breaking the differences between MKx/Nxx down yet.

He was rooted at one point and then unrooted. Never any custom roms/recoveries. The phone was working after he unrooted it but for some reason will no longer pass the boot animation. He was on android 4.3 so does that only correspond to MK2? As far as I can tell it does.

Is there a special procedure for going back to aosp after using 2.0? Also, I use the prep zip that matches my baseband , correct? The instructions say to use the 10 or 11 versions with an aosp ROM but my baseband is 12b.
