Try flashing custom recovery if possible. Of you succeed then using aroma file explorer to copy your WhatsApp backup to external SD card.... After that you can wipe everything and start installing a rom from scratch.

It is safe AFAIK. Download the official KitKat rom for your region and flash it using Odin. Edit: do remember to perform a factory reset before and after flashing the official ROM.
