Thank you luminoso, after a little bit of fiddling around - it is working now!

When I tap the play store version it informs me that it is already the latest version.

Whenever I click the little circle to refresh the available updates it informs me that there are "No updates available" - this evidently isn't the case because I can go onto Chrome and it informs me that it needs an update. Sure enough, if I search for Chrome on the play store I can update it...
