You should be able to change the default sound for Messages. On my phone I click on the App notifications shortcut I created then click on Messages. From there, click on Other notifications and click on Sound.

You can install an app that can create shortcuts to any activity. For example, Activity Manager worked for me.

You should see an entry called Other notifications, click on that (the text not the toggle button and you will then be able to set the Sound and other options.

I don't know if this is the same problem but when I first got my P20 Pro I had audio stop when switching apps. I fixed it by wiping the cache.

It can be done with a very useful app called AutoNotification. It is well worth the low purchase price. Install it and then click on Notification Categories. It works really well.

I think I've found a good solution! The AutoNotification app lets you set the sound for any of an apps Notification Categories! I haven't completely tested it yet but so far it seems to be doing what I need.

I'm really disappointed by this too, this is a huge problem! Android has had this ability for years, it makes no sense to take it away.
