ok, so after playing around for the last hour or so, i've figured out the answer to my own question. i exported the .vcf file from gmail, then imported it into the phone and that did the trick!

Hi everybody, I was able to export all my outlook contacts into a csv file and then upload it to google so that i could sync my captivate. It worked great! the only thing that i'm having a problem with, is that since they're considered google contacts, it won't let me assign a ringtone to them...
