How do I know if a ROM that includes the kernal, OR a seperate kernal has root? BEFORE flashing it?

I have a Samsung Captivate SGH-i897 that was running 4.3 Slimbean. Updated to Android 4.4.4 Slim 4.4.4.build.9.0-WEEKLY-8328, Slim_galaxymtd-userdebug 4.4.4 KTU840 8328 test-key, and 3.0.101_NeatKernal_v1.11-g 75f7180. SELinux status=Enforced. AFter flashing the ROM and Gapps began adding...

Currently running "Android 4.3.1" this is a SlimRom Kernal is "3.0.101+ Semaphore", on my Samsung Captivate. Semaphore CWM Recovery v6.0.3.8 and phone is rooted. Should I be able to just upgrade to ie: SlimCaptivate 4.4.4 or LiquidSmooth right over what I have? Any opinions appreciated.

I've been running JB 4.3.1 for a couple of weeks now, no problems really. Just don't like the new app versions and no way to restore contacts, sms, calendar and memo data sooooooo I would like to return to UCKK4. Since "AFAIK", JB repartitions, will I have to flash back the FROYO 2.2 or can I...
