What a dumb ass...
I finally just got data to work on the VS980 but it still force closes com.android.phone occasionally enough to say Goodbye to this ROM forever. It doesn't run that great anyways. ...

I'm on Rogers so not 100% same situation as yours but I don't have the issue you're describing.
You could try playing with different keyboard settings? (stuff like "auto-capitalisation, auto-punctuate, etc...)

Until recently, only Fido had the update to 8.0 on their upcoming OS releases page.
Now, Rogers just added it. No specific date, only "coming soon!".
