Any kernels before 7/30 are not safe to flash, they still have MMC_CAP_ERASE enabled.

Flash is a CPU hog anyway. Just let the thing die, and embrace HTML5.
Rooted mine through Ubuntu. No issues, I extracted the files, cd into it, then I just copy/pasted the adb commands. Easy.
Did you try a different recovery? I see that one of them suggests TWRP 220.127.116.11 and claims no hang ups. I am currently using that recovery and I can support the no hang ups claim.
