So based on the Google customer support person the boot loader has to be re-locked for a warranty claim and rooting, installing custom ROMs, etc isn't allow either. I've never done any of things because I want to preserve my warranty and insurance...
Did you hold power, tap VOL UP and release both? That is how you enter stock recovery.
